Go Green, Save some Green!

In a world that values the state of the environment more than ever before, it is never too late to jump onboard the GREEN bandwagon. Magicomm is proactive when working towards satisfying the triple bottom line: economic, environmental and social. However, there is always something your company can do to be more efficient. Regardless of what the saving is, it will be good for you and your business.

The best 3 things about going green are:

  • Helping the environment
  • Saving money
  • Corporate publicity

The funny thing about going green is that it’s very simple. It starts with recycling, but there are other simple things you can do which will help your company. Recently, Magicomm has taken a more active approach with going green by being more proactive with recycling. Other simple things can be done such as caulking drafty windows, patching holes in outside walls, insulating water pipes, and turning lights off when leaving a room will help the cause. Yearly inspections to the building should be a strategy that will yield you more results than you expect.

Desktops vs. Laptops- Did you know that some laptops are 95% more energy efficient than most desktops. So those of you who feel you are getting a great deal by buying the cheaper desktop computer, think again. For the amount of electricity it takes to run one desktop computer it takes twice as much electricity to keep it cool and keep your surrounding environment comfortable. A lot of electricity is wasted on things such as fans for cooling computers, air conditioners, heaters, etc. The amount of energy wasted by many older desktop computer monitors can be reduced significantly by switching to LCD monitors. Additionally, setting you computer to hibernate mode when you are not using it for a short period of time.

Energy efficient efforts don’t have to be drastic to be effective and efficient. Some of these simple changes are paying off big for companies who are implementing them, such as:

Stonyfield Farms, a dairy products company, changed from plastic yoghurt tops to aluminum seals which saved them over $1,000,000 USD per year and reduced the impact on the environment.

IKEA, an international consumer store, changed the shape of their coffee cups so that they can fit more in a package with less wasted space. This reduced the amount of packaging they use as well as the amount of gas they use to transport the products.

In closing, many changes can be made that are easy to implement and can have a significant impact on reducing your waste and carbon footprint. Magicomm is always looking for ways to become more environmentally aware and friendly, if you have additional ideas please post them with this blog to share them with others.

Until Next Time

I wanted to send an email out to you guys so maybe you can help others. I purchased a Go Green product from a website called power2savings. At first I were skeptical of there product but I was intrigued on a 60 day money back guarantee. I installed the unit in August and in October I seen a 12% reduction in my energy bill from the month before and a 14 % reduction ($73.00 savings) in my bill from October of 2007 (just to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges) I would recommend this product to anyone who has an electric bill. ANYONE.
